Ethereum is a digital cryptocurrency that runs on its own blockchain, the Ethereum blockchain. Ethereum was launched in 2015. The number of coins is not fixed. 72 million Ether were generated at launch and then new coins are issued every day as a bonus to miners. About 119 million are currently outstanding. Ethereum is different than Bitcoin in that the Ethereum blockchain is widely used to develop applications, whereas the bitcoin blockchain is not. However, the Ethereum blockchain is showing its age, and although it is still widely used, faces competition from more modern blockchains in terms of the race to develop decentralized applications.
